living with parkinson’s

Neurological disorders are considered to be the leading cause of disability globally. Of these, the fastest growing is Parkinson’s disease, whose growth is surpassing that of Alzheimers. In fact, Parkinson’s is now considered a pandemic, with more than 17 million people estimated to have Parkinson’s by 2040.

Gary Wood, 79, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s for the past 10 years. He lives in Greenwich Village, NY, with his son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Gary navigates his life and diagnosis with a vivacious spirit, including drawing daily entries to his grandchildren and writing poetry.

Together, we document his daily life and experiences with Parkinson’s, on black and white medium format film. The rise of Parkinson’s Disease means that awareness and universal connection through art can help others in their own journeys of navigating aging. I found an avenue for processing mortality through photography and collaborating with Gary, and hope others can feel similarly through this piece.

I gots a bad case of the Parkinson's blues

Shakin’, bakin’, rattle and roll.
It’s an ornery bitch losin’ control

Fallin’down and trippin’ up
Don’t know half a whattsup

Shakin’ bakin’ rattle and roll
It’s a bitch losin’ control

Fallin’ up, trippin’ down
Stumblin’ and bumblin’ up town
Stumblin’ and tumblin’ downtown
Don’t know what’s goin’ around

Shakin’ bakin’ rattle and roll
It’s a bitch losin’ control

Walkin’ and talkin’ is a challenge
Toe Hookin’ a sidewalk, ain’t no balance

Shakin’ and bakin’ and rattle and roll
It’s an ornery bitch losin’ control

I’m chokin’ I ain’t smokin’
Coughing, slow talkin’
Mumble
stumble
fumble
Don’t take a tumble
Tremor makes you humble

Nose dive, can’t drive

Need a cane
Hurts my vain
Slow mo
It’s a mofo

Slow talk slow walk

Skip trip break a hip
Keep a stiff upper lip

Slow talkin’ , slow walkin’

Shakin’ and bakin’ and rattle and roll
It’s an ornery bitch losing control
